Story Summary: Borreguita and
the Coyote is a tale from
Ayulta, Mexico. This story is about a “little
lamb” that outsmarts a coyote three times. The first time the lamb tricks the
coyote she tells him that she needs to get more plump and he needs to come back
later. When the coyote returns the lamb tells the coyote that he needs to eat
her masters cheese (which is really the reflection of the moon in a pond). The
third time the coyote comes back the lamb is pretending to hold up a mountain
and offers to go get help if the coyote stays in her place. The coyote gets so
tired that he finally lets go and nothing happens. He knew the little lamb had
outsmarted him and he was going to eat her. The little lamb agrees to let the
coyote eat her. The little lamb rams the coyote’s open mouth and the coyote
runs away in pain. From that day on the coyote never bothers her again.
